Referees: why they get their own section

The spread between a strict and a lenient official reaches two cards per match. How to use referee statistics and what they do not explain.

A dedicated section for referees looks excessive right up until you look at the spread. Averages among officials in the same league differ by a factor of one and a half to two: one shows 2.8 yellows per match, another 5.1. That is larger than the gap between the dirtiest and the most disciplined teams.

What the section shows

The referees page and each official’s card collect: average yellow and red cards, fouls, penalties, the number of matches officiated and the breakdown by league. Separately — how often their matches go over a given card total.

How to read it

  • Sample first. An average over 8 matches means nothing. Rely on officials with several dozen games.
  • League second. A referee working in a rough league will show a high average even if they are personally lenient. Compare them with other officials in the same league, not with everyone at once.
  • Opposition third. Look at what they are given to referee: if it is mostly derbies and relegation six-pointers, the average is inflated by circumstance rather than temperament.

What referee statistics do not explain

They know nothing about what is at stake. Late in the season a relegation battle produces more cards for any official. They also know nothing about appointments: a referee can be swapped a day before the match, which makes the calculation meaningless — check that the match page shows the current official.

A practical routine

The most common use is simple: you look at the card total for a match, see the line, open the appointed referee’s statistics and compare their average with that line. If the official is consistently above the line and the teams are not notably peaceful either, that is at least a reason to dig further.

The same caveat applies as everywhere: if a pattern is obvious, it is usually already in the price.

What to remember

On card markets the referee often matters more than the teams. But read their average together with the league they work in and the sides they officiate.
