How to read a match page

The sections of a match page: team stats, head-to-head, trends, referee, probabilities and odds. What to find where, and in what order to look.

A match page is the densest page on the site, and the first impression is usually “this is too much at once”. That is fixable: the sections are not meant to be read in order.

The sections and the question each answers

  • Summary — the score, how the match went, key events. If the match has been played, start here.
  • Team statistics — averages: goals, shots, corners, fouls, cards. Shown separately for the season and for recent matches.
  • Head-to-head — the history of games between these two sides.
  • Trends — runs: how many matches in a row a team has scored, kept a clean sheet, gone over the total.
  • Referee — statistics for the appointed official.
  • Probabilities — calculated estimates for the outcomes.
  • AI prediction — the model’s estimate broken down by market.
  • Odds — bookmaker lines and how they have moved.

The main rule for reading it

The season average and recent form are two different numbers, and you need both at once. A team that has had a dreadful month drags its season average down only slowly: the slump is barely visible in it. And the reverse — a good run of five matches does not make a team good if it played badly all season.

The gap between those numbers is more informative than either of them. That is exactly why they are shown side by side rather than one instead of the other.

An order that usually works

  1. Decide on the market. A total and a match result need different sections.
  2. For goals — team statistics plus trends. For corners and cards — team statistics plus the referee.
  3. Look at the odds and convert them into a probability (as in the odds lesson, if you took it).
  4. Compare with the model’s estimate. If they disagree, work out why; if they agree, betting at the market price achieves nothing.

About missing data

Sometimes a section is empty: the match statistics have not arrived from the provider yet, or never arrive for that league. We show a dash rather than a zero — they are not the same thing, and substituting zeros would be a lie.

See it on a real match

Below there is a button that opens an actual match page with hints on each section. That is more useful than another paragraph of text.

A real page of the site will open with hints on each section. You can stop the tour at any moment.

What to remember

Do not read the page top to bottom. Form a question, open the matching section — and always check the season average against recent form.
