“Betting on a match” is not one action but dozens of different ones. The match result is merely the most visible market, and far from the most convenient for anyone relying on statistics.
The main groups
- Match result (1X2) — home win, draw, away win. Three options, and the draw is awkward: in football it happens in roughly a quarter of matches, which makes this market less predictable than it looks.
- Totals — the combined number of goals, over or under a given line. “Over 2.5” means “three goals or more”, because half-goals do not exist and a push is impossible.
- Handicaps — a win adjusted by a virtual head start. A −1.5 handicap on the favourite means they must win by at least two goals. Quarter lines exist too (−0.25, −0.75): such a bet is split between the two neighbouring lines, which is why it can settle as half a win.
- Both teams to score — whether each side scored at least once.
- Corners and cards — totals and handicaps on corners, yellow cards and fouls.
Where statistics help more
The difference between markets is not difficulty but the number of events. An average match has 2–3 goals, 9–11 corners and 3–5 yellow cards. The more events there are, the less weight any single piece of luck carries.
One deflection or goalkeeping error flips the match result entirely, and no statistic predicts that. The number of corners, by contrast, follows from playing style: sides that cross a lot and attack down the flanks collect their 6–7 corners in almost any game. Here the averages over recent matches genuinely mean something.
That is why team and league pages show corners, fouls and cards separately rather than goals alone. This is not “extra information” — on these markets it is the main information.
The referee as a separate factor
On card markets the appointed referee often matters more than the teams: the spread between a strict and a lenient official reaches two cards per match. There is a dedicated lesson on this and a dedicated section of the site.
How many goals are actually scored
Rather than trading in impressions, here are live numbers by league — the share of home wins, the average total and how often “over 2.5” lands:

Note the spread between leagues. The habit of saying “football averages 2.5 goals” is true on average and wrong in almost every specific league — and you always bet in a specific one.
